Your entry door is the first thing visitors see and the last barrier between your family and the outside world. Choosing between fiberglass and steel is the most common decision Illinois homeowners face when replacing their front door. Both are excellent choices for our climate, but each has distinct strengths worth understanding before you invest.

After installing thousands of entry doors across Chicagoland over the past 20 years, here's our honest comparison based on real-world performance in Illinois weather.

Fiberglass Entry Doors: The Versatile Performer

Fiberglass has become the most popular entry door material in Illinois, and for good reason. Modern fiberglass doors feature realistic woodgrain textures that are virtually indistinguishable from real wood, even up close. They're manufactured with a compression-molded skin over a polyurethane foam core that provides excellent insulation.

Advantages of Fiberglass

Durability: Fiberglass won't dent from impact like steel, won't crack or warp from temperature swings, and will never rot from moisture exposure. In Illinois, where we experience temperature swings of 100+ degrees annually, this stability is crucial. A fiberglass door installed in Wheaton will look the same in January at -10°F as it does in July at 95°F.

Maintenance: Fiberglass requires essentially zero maintenance. No repainting, no refinishing, no rust treatment. An occasional wipe-down with soap and water is all that's needed for decades of service.

Energy efficiency: Fiberglass doors with polyurethane foam cores provide excellent insulation values, typically R-5 to R-7, which reduces heat transfer between your conditioned interior and the outside air.

Aesthetics: Available in hundreds of styles, colors, and glass configurations. Stainable woodgrain options mimic mahogany, oak, cherry, and other premium woods. Decorative glass inserts, sidelites, and transoms create a custom look.

Cost: Mid-range, typically $1,500-$4,000 installed depending on style, size, and glass options.

Limitations of Fiberglass

Fiberglass can crack under extreme, concentrated impact (though this is rare in residential settings). The initial cost is higher than basic steel doors. Some homeowners feel that despite excellent woodgrain textures, fiberglass doesn't quite match the warmth of real wood upon very close inspection.

Steel Entry Doors: Maximum Security and Value

Steel remains the go-to choice for homeowners who prioritize security and budget-friendliness above all else.

Advantages of Steel

Security: Steel is the strongest residential door material available. It resists forced entry better than any alternative. Most steel doors come with reinforced strike plates and can accommodate heavy-duty deadbolts and multi-point locking systems.

Fire resistance: Steel doors carry the highest fire resistance ratings, providing critical protection and potentially lowering homeowner's insurance premiums.

Cost: Steel doors offer the best value, typically $1,000-$2,500 installed. For homeowners on a budget who want a quality upgrade from an aging wood door, steel delivers significant improvement at the lowest price point.

Insulation: Steel doors with polyurethane foam cores provide good insulation, though not quite as high as the best fiberglass options.

Limitations of Steel

Denting: Steel can dent from impact — a kicked soccer ball, a falling package, even large hail can leave marks. While dents can sometimes be repaired, they're a permanent concern throughout the door's life.

Rust: If the finish is scratched or chipped (from keys, pet claws, or impact), the exposed steel will rust. This is particularly problematic in Illinois where road salt spray and moisture are constant threats from November through March. Regular touch-up painting at scratch points is necessary.

Thermal conductivity: Steel conducts temperature more readily than fiberglass. During extreme cold, the interior surface of a steel door can feel noticeably cooler than a fiberglass door — and condensation can form on the interior surface during very cold snaps.

Our Recommendation for Illinois Homeowners

For most Chicagoland homes, we recommend fiberglass. The combination of dent resistance, zero maintenance, temperature stability, and aesthetic versatility makes it the best all-around choice for our demanding climate. You'll never have to worry about rust, repainting, or weather damage.

Choose steel if maximum security is your top priority, budget is the primary constraint, or the door is in a protected location (like a side entry under a deep overhang) where impact and weather exposure are minimal.

A Third Option: Wood Entry Doors

For homeowners who want the ultimate in warmth and elegance, solid wood entry doors remain unmatched. Mahogany, oak, and premium hardwood doors are genuine works of craftsmanship. However, they require significant maintenance (annual refinishing) and are susceptible to moisture damage in Illinois's humid summers and wet winters. We install them for clients who understand and accept the maintenance commitment.
