Our 6-Step Insurance Claim Process

Step 1: Free Storm Damage Inspection

We climb up on your roof — not just look from the ground. Our inspector documents every shingle, vent, flashing, valley, and penetration with detailed photos. We examine your gutters, downspouts, soffit, fascia, siding, windows, and any other exterior elements that may have been damaged. You receive a comprehensive written report with photo evidence. No charge, no obligation. If there's no damage, we tell you honestly. If there is damage, we show you exactly what we found and what insurance typically covers.

Step 2: Insurance Claim Filing

Once we confirm damage, we help you file the claim with your insurance company. We know exactly what adjusters in Illinois look for and what documentation they require. We provide you with our inspection report and photos to support your claim. We also advise you on timing — most Illinois policies have strict deadlines for reporting storm damage, typically 1 year from the date of the storm event. Filing promptly protects your rights.

Step 3: Adjuster Meeting (We're There)

This is the single most important step — and where many homeowners get underpaid or denied. We meet your insurance adjuster on-site at your home. We climb up together, walk the roof, and point out every damaged area. Adjusters are professionals, but they're also human — they can miss damage, underestimate scope, or disagree on whether certain items qualify. Having an experienced contractor present dramatically increases the likelihood of a fair, complete settlement. If the adjuster's initial scope is incomplete, we advocate on your behalf for a supplemental claim.

Step 4: Scope Review & Material Selection

Once your claim is approved, we sit down with you to review the approved scope of work and discuss material options. Insurance typically covers "like-kind and quality" — meaning if you had 30-year architectural shingles, you get 30-year architectural shingles. But you also have the option to upgrade (for example, from 3-tab to architectural, or from asphalt to impact-resistant shingles) by paying the upgrade cost yourself. We walk you through your options and present transparent pricing.

Step 5: Professional Installation

Our specialized roofing crews handle the installation — never subcontracted to rotating teams. We protect your landscaping, driveway, and exterior with tarps and plywood. Complete tear-off to the decking, inspection of all sheathing, ice and water barrier, synthetic underlayment, new shingles per manufacturer specifications, ridge vents, flashing around all penetrations, and drip edge along all eaves and rakes. Most insurance replacements are completed in 1-3 days.

Step 6: Final Inspection & Warranty

We perform a thorough magnetic nail sweep of your entire property, clean up all debris, clear your gutters, and walk the completed project with you. We register your manufacturer warranty (GAF, Owens Corning, or CertainTeed) and provide you with our workmanship warranty documentation. We also provide your insurance company with final invoices and photos for claim closure.

Types of Storm Damage We Document

Hail Damage

Hail is the most common cause of residential roof claims in Illinois. Even small hail (1-1.5 inches) can cause significant damage, though it often isn't visible from the ground. Hail impacts create "bruises" where the granules are knocked off the shingle surface, exposing the underlying asphalt. Over time, these bruised areas fail early — water penetrates, the underlayment deteriorates, and leaks develop. Our inspectors know exactly what hail damage looks like and how to document it for insurance purposes.

Wind Damage

Straight-line winds and gusts during thunderstorms regularly exceed 60 mph in Chicagoland. Winds lift, tear, and detach shingles — sometimes obviously (missing shingles), sometimes subtly (lifted tabs that look fine but have broken their adhesive seal). Wind damage also includes damaged flashing, displaced ridge caps, and torn underlayment. Wind damage is progressive — a loosened shingle will fail completely in the next storm.

Falling Debris

Tree limbs, branches, and debris during storms cause impact damage, punctures, and structural issues. Large limbs can damage trusses and decking, not just shingles. We document all debris-related damage and coordinate with your insurance on both exterior and any interior (attic, ceiling) damage.

Ice Dams & Winter Damage

Illinois winters create ice dam conditions where snow melts, refreezes at the eaves, and backs up under shingles. Water penetrates underlayment, damages decking, and leaks into attics and walls. Ice dam damage is often covered by homeowners insurance, particularly when it results in interior water damage. Proper attic ventilation and ice/water barrier installation prevent recurrence.

We Are NOT Storm Chasers

After every major storm, out-of-state "storm chaser" contractors flood into Chicagoland neighborhoods knocking on doors. They're here today, gone tomorrow. They cut corners to maximize profit. They disappear when warranty claims come up. They've given the legitimate roofing industry a bad name.

We are the opposite. Windows Doors & Beyond is based in Wheaton, Illinois. Our team members live in DuPage County. We've been in business for over 20 years and we're not going anywhere. When you call us 5 years from now with a question about your roof, we'll still be here. Our reputation is built on being the contractor homeowners refer to their friends and neighbors — 95% of our business comes from referrals.

We're also Andersen Certified for windows, licensed and insured in Illinois, GAF and Owens Corning certified for roofing, and fully bonded. You can verify our business registration, contractor license, and insurance coverage before signing anything. We encourage you to do exactly that — it's how you tell a legitimate local contractor from a storm chaser.

Why Use a Roofing Contractor for Your Insurance Claim?

  • We know what adjusters look for — Our inspectors know exactly what damage qualifies and how to document it. This often means the difference between a denied claim and a fully approved replacement.
  • We advocate at the adjuster meeting — Homeowners who meet adjusters alone often accept an incomplete scope. We ensure every damaged item is documented and included.
  • We file supplemental claims when needed — If the initial adjuster missed items or underpriced line items, we file supplements with detailed documentation.
  • You get quality installation — Insurance-paid roofs are sometimes treated as "budget" jobs by contractors. Not us. Every insurance replacement gets the same specialized crew and premium materials as our retail projects.
  • Zero stress for you — You call us, we handle it. The entire process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will filing a claim raise my insurance rates?+
Generally no. Storm damage claims are classified as "acts of nature" — not the homeowner's fault — so they don't typically affect your rates the way at-fault claims might. Most insurance companies do not raise rates based on weather-related claims alone.
How much will I pay out of pocket?+
Typically just your deductible — whatever amount is listed on your policy (commonly $1,000 or $2,500 for most homeowners). If you choose to upgrade materials, you pay the upgrade cost. Otherwise, insurance covers the full replacement.
How long do I have to file a storm damage claim?+
Most Illinois homeowners policies require reporting within 1 year of the storm event. We recommend filing as soon as possible — damage gets worse over time, and some insurance companies argue delayed reporting caused additional damage.
What if my claim is denied?+
Denials often happen when adjusters miss damage or document incompletely. If your claim was denied, let us inspect your roof and review the adjuster's report. In many cases, a second inspection with better documentation results in re-evaluation and approval.
Do you work with all insurance companies?+
Yes — State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, American Family, Country Financial, Progressive, Travelers, USAA, and every other major carrier serving Illinois.
How do I know if I have storm damage?+
Visual signs include missing shingles, granules in gutters, dents on flashing. But much hail and wind damage isn't visible from the ground. The only way to know for sure is a professional roof inspection. We provide these free.
