Ice dams are one of the most damaging winter phenomena for Illinois roofs. They cause leaks, interior water damage, rotted fascia, destroyed gutters, and expensive repairs. Here's how they form and how to prevent them.

How Ice Dams Form

The process is simple: heat escaping from your living space warms the roof deck. Snow on the upper roof melts and runs down toward the eaves. At the eaves (which overhang the heated space and are colder), the water refreezes into a ridge of ice. This ice ridge — the "dam" — blocks subsequent meltwater from draining off the roof. The trapped water backs up under the shingles and leaks into your home.

The Root Cause: Heat Loss

Ice dams are fundamentally a heat-loss problem, not a roofing problem. The fix targets three areas:

1. Attic Insulation

Inadequate attic insulation allows heat from your living space to warm the roof deck. Illinois code calls for R-49 attic insulation — many older homes have R-19 or less. Adding insulation to R-49 is one of the most cost-effective ice dam solutions.

2. Attic Ventilation

Proper soffit-to-ridge ventilation keeps the roof deck cold by flushing warm air out through the ridge vent and pulling cold air in through the soffit vents. Without adequate ventilation, warm air accumulates in the attic and heats the roof deck unevenly.

3. Air Sealing

Gaps around attic hatches, vent pipes, electrical penetrations, and recessed lights allow warm air to bypass insulation entirely. Air sealing these gaps stops the heat loss that drives ice dam formation.

Roofing Solutions

When we install or replace a roof, we address ice dam prevention through ice and water barrier membrane along all eaves (extending 24 inches past the interior wall line), proper soffit-to-ridge ventilation, and drip edge along all eaves. These don't fix the underlying heat loss, but they provide critical backup protection when ice dams do form. Learn about our roofing installation →
