Your window installation date is on the calendar — exciting! A little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a smooth, efficient installation day for both you and our crew. Here's everything you need to know to prepare your home, what to expect during the installation, and how to care for your new windows afterward.
One Week Before Installation
Review your project scope: Confirm which windows are being replaced and their locations. If you have any last-minute questions about styles, colors, or configurations, now is the time to call. Plan for pets: Crews will be entering and exiting your home frequently, and exterior doors will be open at times. Arrange to keep pets in a closed room away from the work area, or consider boarding them for the day if they're anxious around strangers and noise. Notify your HOA: If your community has an HOA, confirm that any required approvals are in place and notify them of the scheduled work date.
The Day Before Installation
Clear interior areas: Move furniture, lamps, and decorations at least 3-4 feet away from every window being replaced. Our crews bring drop cloths, but moving items in advance protects your belongings and allows the crew to work efficiently. Remove window treatments: Take down curtains, blinds, shades, and valances from all windows being replaced. Remove any hardware (curtain rods, brackets) that could interfere with the installation or get damaged. Clear windowsills: Remove plants, picture frames, and any items from every windowsill. Take down wall decorations: Remove pictures, mirrors, and shelving near windows. Vibration from removal and installation can knock items loose. Clear exterior access: Move outdoor furniture, potted plants, grills, and garden decorations away from the house exterior near windows. Our crew needs clear access to every window from outside. Trim back any bushes or shrubs that are directly against the house below window openings.
Installation Day: What to Expect
Crew arrival: Our crew typically arrives between 7:30-8:30 AM. They'll introduce themselves, review the project scope with you, and confirm any last-minute details. Protection setup: The crew places drop cloths over floors, furniture, and carpeting near each window. They protect your home as if it were their own. Old window removal: Each old window is carefully removed from the inside. Expect some noise during this phase — prying, cutting, and removal of old materials. Dust and debris are contained as much as possible, but some dust is unavoidable. Opening preparation: The crew inspects the rough opening for rot, water damage, or structural issues. Minor repairs are addressed on the spot. Significant issues will be communicated to you immediately. New window installation: Each window is carefully placed, leveled, shimmed, insulated, sealed, and secured. Low-expansion foam insulation fills gaps for maximum energy performance. Interior and exterior trim is applied for a clean, finished appearance. Timeline: Plan for 30-60 minutes per window. A typical 10-15 window project takes 1-2 full days. Access needs: The crew needs access to both the interior and exterior of every window being replaced. Plan to be home or have someone available throughout the installation. Climate comfort: There will be brief periods when openings are exposed during window swaps. In cold weather, we work room by room to minimize heat loss. In summer, your AC will run a bit more.
After Installation
Final walkthrough: The foreman walks through every window with you, demonstrating operation (opening, closing, tilting, locking), pointing out any items to be aware of, and confirming your satisfaction. Cleanup: Our crew removes all old windows, packaging, and debris. We vacuum and sweep interior areas. The goal is to leave your home cleaner than we found it. New window care: Wait 24-48 hours before washing new windows to allow sealants to cure. Clean with mild soap and water — no abrasive cleaners or pressure washers. Operate each window several times in the first week to ensure smooth function.
