Within 24-48 hours of a major hailstorm in Chicagoland, your doorbell will ring. Storm chasers — out-of-state roofing companies — flood damaged neighborhoods promising free inspections and quick insurance claims. Some are legitimate contractors following the work. Many are not. Here's how to protect yourself.

Red Flags of Storm Chasers

• Door-to-door solicitation immediately after a storm — legitimate local contractors don't need to canvass; their phones are already ringing
• Out-of-state license plates on their trucks — they followed the storm here and will follow the next one out
• No local address — they operate from hotel rooms and temporary offices
• Pressure to sign immediately — "Sign this contract today so we can get you on the schedule" is a tactic, not a service
• Offering to "cover your deductible" — this is insurance fraud. It's illegal in Illinois. Any contractor who offers this is breaking the law and putting YOU at risk.
• Can't provide local references — ask for 3 references in your city from the last 6 months. Storm chasers can't provide them.
• Vague or no warranty — if they won't be here next year, their "warranty" is worthless

Questions to Ask ANY Contractor After a Storm

1. What is your LOCAL business address? (Not a P.O. box)
2. How long have you been in business in this area?
3. Can you provide 3 references from homeowners within 20 miles?
4. Are you licensed, insured, and bonded in Illinois? (Ask to see certificates)
5. Do you carry workers' compensation insurance? (Critical — without it, YOU could be liable for injuries)
6. What manufacturer certifications do you hold? (GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed)
7. Will you be here in 2 years if I have a warranty issue?
