If your home needs multiple exterior upgrades, the order you do them in matters. Each element integrates with the others, and doing them out of sequence means extra labor, potential damage to new work, and higher costs.
The Correct Sequence
1. Roof First
Always start at the top. Roof tear-off creates debris — old shingles, nails, and material fall along the sides of the house. If you installed new siding before the roof, that debris would damage your brand-new siding. Additionally, the roof needs to be weathertight before any other exterior work begins. Roofing services →
2. Windows Second
Install windows after the roof but before siding. The siding crew needs to wrap around the new window frames cleanly with proper flashing and J-channel. If windows go in after siding, the siding around the window openings has to be cut and patched — which looks worse and is less weather-tight. Window replacement →
3. Entry & Patio Doors
Same logic as windows — install before siding so the siding wraps around the new door frames properly. Door installation →
4. Siding Third
With the roof, windows, and doors in place, siding goes on over the new housewrap, wrapping cleanly around all openings. Siding installation →
5. Gutters Last
Gutters mount to the new fascia after siding is complete. Installing gutters before siding means removing and reinstalling them — wasted labor and money. Gutter installation →
