Gutters are easy to ignore — until they fail and you're dealing with foundation damage, basement flooding, or rotting fascia. Here are the seven signs it's time to replace your gutters.

1. Gutters Pulling Away from the House

If your gutters are sagging or pulling away from the fascia board, the hangers or spikes have failed. This causes water to pour behind the gutter and down the wall — directly where you don't want it. Sometimes re-securing with new hangers is enough; if the fascia is rotted from the water damage, replacement is needed.

2. Visible Cracks, Holes, or Rust

Small cracks become big cracks fast — especially through Illinois freeze-thaw cycles where water enters cracks, freezes, expands, and makes the crack bigger every winter. If you're seeing multiple cracks or rust spots, patching is a temporary fix at best.

3. Water Pooling Around Your Foundation

After rain, walk around your home. If you see water pooling near the foundation, your gutters aren't doing their job. This is the most expensive gutter failure to ignore — foundation repair costs far more than new gutters.

4. Peeling Paint on Fascia or Soffit

Paint peeling on the boards behind your gutters means water is consistently running behind them. This leads to rot that will eventually compromise the structural integrity of your roof edge.

5. Multiple Leaking Seams

This is the biggest advantage of seamless gutters over sectional. Every seam in a sectional gutter is a potential leak point. If you have sectional gutters with multiple leaking joints, upgrading to seamless eliminates the problem entirely.

6. Basement Moisture After Rain

Dampness, musty smell, or actual water in your basement during or after heavy rain often traces back to gutter failure allowing water to saturate the soil against your foundation.

7. Your Gutters Are 20+ Years Old

Aluminum gutters last 20-30 years with maintenance. If yours are approaching that age and showing any of the signs above, proactive replacement prevents costly water damage.
